Many organisations are big on having a strategy. You know, a decent-sized documented strategic plan that includes high level information about their goals, financial circumstances, and tactics for growth. And why not? Being clear about what you are setting out to achieve is good for management, good for staff and good for external partners too.
However, what organisations commonly forget to do is look at what strategy, tactics, processes and measures are already in place and think through how the transition will be made.
We believe that it is important to not only be clear on your strategy, but also to be clear on (1) what processes underpin and implement that strategy, and (2) what changes may need to be made to improve or change the implementation of a strategy.
This is one example of where the Superior Business Analysis Framework can be very helpful. This framework illustrates the tools through which the highest-level strategy can be brought to life. As well as needing clarity about the mission, goals and principles of an organisation, you always need to be clear on:
- What tactics will you use to actually achieve those goals?
- What action areas or functional areas of the organisation will you need in place to deliver on these tactics?
- What processes (and what process steps) actually implement those tactics?
- What systems, tools, forms and templates will you use to make your processes effective and efficient?
- What meaningful measures need to be used to track the success of the strategy and its implementation?
- And how will you collect the data you need to report against those measures?
To create a plan and therefore your roadmap for improving what is happening in your organisation you need to think through:
- Do these questions have answers?
- Are these answers documented, effective and practical?
- Are these answers in alignment?
- Do these answers need to be reviewed in light of changes to strategy?
Once you have completed this audit of what is currently in place and where improvement or other changes are needed, you now know what your Improvement Roadmap needs to include. Prioritise those changes and your Roadmap is ready to go.
